A Titusville resident has discovered a segment from the Johnny Cash Show television program in which Titusville, along with Colonel Drake, are prominently feature in song.
Tyler Brenton found Cash's performance of “Ride This Train” after typing in Titusville, Pa., on YouTube. Brenton sent the word out about the segment to a wide variety of people in the area.
“I thought it was neat, so I sent it out to a lot of people,” Brenton said, who added that she enjoyed the older type of country music, such as Cash's, June Carter's and Patsy Kline's.

The video clip shows Cash strumming his guitar and discussing the events that led to the discovery of oil in Titusville in 1859 by Col. Drake.
“The news was out,” Cash told the studio and home audience. “There was a stampede to northwestern Pennsylvania that rivaled the gold rush. Oil was on the way.”
The song, “Ride This Time,” contains the chorus, “Drillin', drillin', muscle and machine, a mighty race, at a devil's pace, trying to reach a dream.”
Cash hosted his own variety television series from the summer of 1969 to the spring of 1971. The segment on YouTube is believed to be from the year 1970.
As part of the program, Cash also mentioned the importance of oil production in Texas, which followed the boom in Pennsylvania. Texas is known as the place where the first gusher was produced.
Cash concluded his performance, by saying, “Oil is used in a thousand products. It all started with a man called Col. Drake. Good night Col. Drake and thanks for the oil. I was a quart low.”
Brenton said that she has received some feedback about Cash's performance posted on Facebook.
“I got a couple [of comments] from people around town,” Brenton said. “It was really cool.”
One of the persons who Brenton contacted about the performance was Leah Carter of Titusville Renaissance Inc., who commented, “I think it was great that a nationally known figure recognized Titusville.”
Carter went on to say that she was impressed by the fact that the song, and Cash's description of the events at that time period, were historically accurate.
“It's great that he showcased the significance of what happened here,” Carter said.
Barb Zolli, Drake Well Park and Museum site administrator, commented, “I thought first of all how young [Cash] looked. His facts were accurate and he sounded sincere. He appeared to know what he was talking about.”
Zolli also commented favorably on the fact that Cash, in the segment, identified with the working class rather than with the oil company owners.
